Green Carbon, Inc. has signed an MOU with Zimmermann Co., Ltd. for the development of nature-based carbon credit in Thailand

Aims to undertake a methane gas reduction project in a maximum of 7,000ha of paddy fields.

Green Carbon, Inc.  (CEO: Jun Okita, hereinafter referred to as “Green Carbon”) is pleased to announce that it has signed an MOU with Zimmermann Co., Ltd. (CEO: Kittisophon Thaninsiriphitthaya, hereinafter referred to as “Zimmermann”). The MOU aims to promote a project focused on a generating carbon credit through nature-based solutions in Thailand.

◆ Background and Role of the MOU with Zimmermann

Green Carbon is dedicated to creating nature-based carbon credits primarily in Southeast Asia. Our initiatives include a wide range of projects such as forest conservation, rice paddy management, mangrove reforestation, reducing methane emissions from cattle, and biochar projects. Among them, we are promoting projects mainly in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand with a focus on methane gas reduction projects in rice paddies using AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying ※1) .

Meanwhile, Zimmermann has been promoting nature-based decarbonization activities in Thailand and following an introduction from Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon, which signed an MOU with Zimmermann at the end of September 2024, Zimmermann has decided to sign an MOU with Zimmermann to expand its nature-based carbon credit generation project in Thailand.

Based on the MOU, Green Carbon and Zimmermann will start developing a methane gas reduction project in rice paddies in Thailand from December 2024 and will expand the nature-based carbon credit generation projects such as afforestation, mangrove and biochar.

Zimmermann’s role is to secure land for project implementation and conduct field surveys to determine the baseline needed for actual measurement. Green Carbon will work to design an optimal project in the demonstration site, register the project as a carbon credit project, and obtain investors who agree to the project.

The paddy field project will be implemented in Kamphaeng Phet Province in southwestern Thailand and is expected to expand from 815 ha in the first year to a maximum of approximately 7,000 ha, with annual reduction of approximately 3,000 t-CO2e and a maximum of approximately 27,000t-CO2e. Additionally, in signing the MOU, Green Carbon has received cooperation from the Land Development Departure of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, which will continue to support the implementation of the project. Green Carbon will contribute to the realization of sustainable development and a decarbonized society in Thailand through this collaboration.

◆Comment from Dr. Kittisophon Thaninsiriphitthaya, CEO of Zimmermann

AWD is a technique that involves periodically flooding and naturally drying paddy fields based on the water level. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage and contribute to the conservation of water resources.
