We interviewed Kaito Doi, Planning Manager of the Domestic Business Units Maneger: what does a young man of just 27 years of age, who has been involved in GreenCarbon since its inception, have to say? Please read on to find out!
Q.Please briefly introduce yourself, including your career to date.
As a new graduate, I was hired by a major PR agency as part of its new business development department and was involved in the expansion of its ESG consulting business, supporting ESG and sustainability disclosure for listed companies as an ESG consultant, and was entrusted with handling around five clients as my main contact. A year later, when Green Carbon was launched, I joined the company as a spin-out, and while continuing to provide ESG consulting services, I have also started to focus on credit-related work.
My current work mainly involves planning the business from the reading of methodologies to the application for actual credits. For this purpose, we are involved in reading various methodologies, managing and applying for actual data, developing systems and promoting cooperation with companies.
Q.What are the difficulties and challenges within your work?
I have been entrusted with many tasks, and each task has its own difficulties, but one difficulty that can be said to be common to all of them is that I think I have to constantly open up new fields. I think the most rewarding thing is to overcome these difficulties and feel that the business is progressing.
The carbon credit industry is still in its infancy in Japan, and there are still not many precedents, especially in the field of nature-derived products, which we are promoting. It is very difficult to think about how to build a business in a situation where there are no precedents and we don’t know what is needed or what to do. To use an analogy, it’s like having to complete a puzzle that you don’t know if the finished form is correct, but you don’t even know what the pieces are.
I am experiencing the difficulties and rewards of creating a new business by repeatedly thinking about what I can do while doing various things, and somehow giving it shape. I receive accurate feedback from my seniors and the president on what I do and say, and I feel a sense of growth and satisfaction every time the business expands little by little!
Q.What do you like about Green Carbon?
I think there are two points: they take my opinion and I can do anything I want.
In terms of the first point, I appreciate the environment where people listen to my opinions, such as ‘maybe we should do this better’. I am very grateful for an environment that listens to my opinions, and I am able to proceed with all the work we do as a team and the work I am asked to do in a satisfactory manner. I am still a young and inexperienced person, but I think that the environment in which I can express my opinions to my seniors and the president is unique to our company.
On the second point, the president tells me that I can find something new and do whatever I want. Of course, it has to be a viable business, but we are always thinking of new projects in various fields. I have researched and explored various possibilities, and not all of them have progressed, but all of this thinking and the opinions I receive about my ideas are linked to my growth.
Q.What are your future challenges?
First of all, I want to expand my current business and develop new businesses; I want to experience all phases, from 0 to 1, 1 to 10 and 10 to 100, and learn how to create and grow a business.
I still don’t have an image of what I will be doing in 10 or 20 years’ time, but I believe that this company will grow and I will be part of its expansion. (I believe) I think the president is a genius at creating business, so my future goal is to be able to surpass him.
Q.Finally, do you have a message for people who want to work for GreenCarbon?
There are many things that are important when deciding where to work, but considering that you spend half of your day at work, I think it is very important to be able to enjoy that time with a sense of fulfilment. Let’s grow this company together while having fun and realising our daily growth! We look forward to seeing you soon!
