Green Carbon is actively engaged in the development of nature-based carbon credits, primarily in Southeast Asia. The company undertakes a diverse range of projects tailored to the characteristics of natural resources in each region, including forest conservation, paddy field management, mangrove reforestation, methane emission reduction from livestock, and biochar utilization. Additionally, Green Carbon leverages satellite data for site selection and monitoring of its projects.

In Vietnam, Green Carbon’s core initiative is the methane gas reduction project in rice paddies using Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD)※4. Following the establishment of its Vietnamese branch in August 2024, Green Carbon has secured MOUs with 19 Vietnamese provinces, achieving the highest number among Japanese companies.  About the Food Innovation Hub

The Food Innovation Hub (FIH) is a global initiative proposed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) to transform food systems. The initiative aims to promote food system transformation in each country and region by scaling up innovative solutions. Vietnam was selected as one of the pilot countries for this initiative. While the country’s food and agriculture sector play a vital role in the national economy, it faces challenges in infrastructure development, institutional capacity, and human capital. Additionally, the sector confronts challenges such as climate change, shortage of advanced technology and skilled personnel, and intensifying international competition.

In response to these challenges, the Vietnam FIH was established based on the country’s existing initiative, the “Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture in Vietnam (PSAV).” Under the vision of “a more competitive, equitable, and sustainable food and agriculture sector,” the following initiatives are being promoted:

・Key Activities:

  • Developing supportive policy environments to facilitate innovation
  • Enhancement of public-private partnerships
  • Development of knowledge and capabilities for innovation
  • Establishment of new and strengthening of existing innovation pipelines

・Advisory Committee Role:

The Advisory Committee comprises domestic and international experts in agriculture, processing, value chains, and innovation. The committee reviews recommendations from sector-specific task forces and regional clusters to provide strategic guidance to the steering committee.

Committee members represent diverse organizations, including various departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), global corporations, research institutions, and startups with expertise in the agriculture and food sectors.

・Expected Outcomes:

In the short to medium term, the initiative is expected to reduce barriers to agricultural innovation, scale up innovation through public-private partnerships, and promote investment in priority innovations. Long-term expectations include improving the quality and competitiveness of Vietnam’s food and agriculture systems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector, and increasing income for farmers and agriculture-related businesses.

 Future Outlook

As a member of the Vietnam FIH Advisory Committee, Green Carbon will collaborate with the Vietnamese government and various partners to promote food system transformation. Specifically, the company will focus on generating carbon credits in the agricultural sector, with rice paddy methane reduction projects as its core initiative. By utilizing carbon credit revenue, the company will contribute to farmers’ income improvement through stable additional revenue streams. Furthermore, through the analysis of data collected from projects, including harvest yields, Green Carbon aims to develop climate-resilient and sustainable farming methods in the long term.

As a member of the FIH Advisory Committee, Green Carbon will maximize its experience and expertise to work towards achieving both sustainable agriculture in Vietnam and economic independence for farmers.

The 1 Million Hectares Project is a Vietnamese government initiative announced in November 2023, aimed at promoting high-quality, environmentally sustainable rice cultivation across one million hectares of rice paddies in the Mekong Delta region by 2030. Led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the project strives to achieve both environmental conservation and regional economic development through the implementation of sustainable agricultural technologies such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD).

※4:Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) Irrigation

Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is an irrigation technique where water levels in rice paddies serve as indicators to alternate between flooding and natural drying over several-day intervals.
