Q. Please give us a brief introduction of yourself, including your career history.

My name is Sena, and I’m a recent graduate from the University of Freiburg in Germany. After finishing high school in Kumamoto, I decided to move to Freiburg, one of Germany’s greenest cities, to dive deep into Environmental and Sustainability Sciences. My thesis there focused on how agricultural land structures impact bee populations.

While my studies gave me a strong grasp of sustainability models and environmental issues, I realized I had very little hands-on experience in the professional world. I am currently interning during my gap year before starting my Master’s program this October. I joined Green Carbon because I wanted to experience how Nature-Based Solutions transition from academic theory into concrete climate action.

Q. What made you want to work at Green Carbon?

I’ve always been fascinated by the mechanisms we use to tackle climate change, and Carbon Credits particularly caught my eye. During my fourth year of university, I started looking for an internship that aligned with my studies and stumbled upon Green Carbon. It felt like the perfect opportunity to take my academic background and apply it to tangible, high-impact projects. I wanted to see how the theory of climate mitigation and emission reduction actually works on the ground.

Q.What kind of work are you involved in? Please tell us about your job responsibilities.

As an intern in the Overseas Operations team, I focus on our projects in the Philippines. My job here is to ensure that these projects are running smoothly and that we are tracking their progress accurately. Specifically, I handle Data QA/QC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) for our AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) projects. I work closely with local coordinators and partner universities to make sure the data we collect meets the strict requirements of international standards like Verra and Gold Standard. It’s a lot of responsibility, but it’s been incredible to see how field-level agricultural changes eventually turn into global climate impact.

Q. What challenges have you faced so far?

The biggest challenge was definitely the steep learning curve regarding the project data. In the operations team, we handle everything from qualitative farmer training reports to geospatial map data and technical methane emission figures. Initially, it was a lot to juggle, especially trying to understand the roles of all the different stakeholders involved.

However, overcoming that has been the most rewarding part. I’ve gained a bird’s-eye view of the entire process. Seeing and helping manage an AWD project from start to finish was exactly the kind of real-world experience I was looking for.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

10 years feels like a long time, but I hope to be a professional who moves beyond just “damage control” and helps build systems that actually improve the environment for future generations. I truly believe that the work Green Carbon is doing right now is the start of a massive wave, and I want to be at the forefront of that movement.

Q. Finally, please give a message to those who want to work at Green Carbon.

Even as an intern here, you aren’t just watching from the sidelines. You are given real responsibilities and the chance to work closely with diverse teams and international projects. This experience is incredibly valuable regardless of what career path you choose later. If you want to see how sustainability works in action, this is the place to be!
