Q. Please give us a brief introduction of yourself, including your career history.
My name is Phi Lam Phong, please call me Phong, and I’m currently a third-year student at Nagoya University. Since junior high school, I had always dreamed of studying abroad. Initially, I planned to pursue my studies in the U.S. or the U.K., but due to financial limitations, I chose to complete my undergraduate degree at Nagoya University, where I received financial support.
Looking back, coming to Japan was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It was here that I discovered my passion for martial arts and developed a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. I’ve also been fortunate to meet a kind and supportive professor, along with many great friends at the university. I’d love to stay and work in Japan after graduation as well.
Q.What made you want to work at Green Carbon?
When I learned that Green Carbon is carrying out several projects in Vietnam, my home country, I felt it would be a wonderful place to work. Growing up in Hanoi, I witnessed how rapid urbanization threatens the environment. That is why I am eager to contribute to protecting and improving our living environment through working at Green Carbon.
Q.What kind of work are you involved in? Please tell us about your job responsibilities.
I’m currently interning with the Operations team, where my main responsibility is support in constructing a statistical analysis model for AWD projects. My work focuses on questions like: How many pipes should be installed to maximize efficiency while minimizing costs? or How should we group and analyze water level data?
To answer these questions, I’ve been studying statistical formulas, calculation methods, and reviewing previous research related to AWD. This process has deepened my understanding of both the technical and practical aspects of the work.
Q.What do you find rewarding about your work?
The most rewarding part of my work is being able to apply what I’ve learned in school to real-world problems. My tasks often involve reviewing previous research, formulas, and analyzing project data—very similar to what I’ve done during my coursework.
However, the key difference is that real project data isn’t perfect or complete, like controlled exercises at school. Sometimes there are errors or missing values. But that’s exactly what makes the work engaging. It challenges us to think critically and solve problems step by step, constantly working to improve the situation.
Q. What challenges have you faced so far?
This is actually my first time working with practical project data, so the most challenging part has been the lack of available samples—we have to build everything from scratch. However, looking on the bright side, this also gives me the opportunity to be creative. My mentor also encourages us to think critically about our work, and always challenges the base knowledge. Therefore, I have the freedom to dive deeper into research and try out new models, even if they don’t always succeed.
Q. Finally, please give a message to those who want to work at Green Carbon.
For those considering joining, I believe Green Carbon offers a supportive environment where individuals can truly grow. As an intern, you’ll benefit greatly from the team’s mentoring system, which provides valuable learning opportunities from the employees. Being involved in problem-solving within the company also offers invaluable hands-on experience and practical insights.
