Q. Please give us a brief introduction of yourself, including your career history.
Inspired by the joy of jumping into new places during a year-long high school exchange program in the US, I’ve actively sought out new and unfamiliar experiences throughout my university life. This same curiosity has driven me to explore many “unknowns.”
When I was a freshmen and sophomore, I was part of a student organization that planned and ran a business contest. After stepping down from that role, I took on multiple long-term internships at various companies and returned to the US for another study abroad experience, which brings me to where I am today.
Currently, as a culmination of my academic studies, I am researching in the field of experimental economics. Through experiments, I am investigating whether the same outcome is evaluated differently based on the process that led to it—specifically, whether the outcome was achieved through effort or by chance.
Q. What made you decide to work at Green Carbon?
I was thinking about what to do after finishing my job hunt when I happened to discover Green Carbon on LinkedIn.
I reached out right away, and after an interview, I was so drawn to the company’s vision, innovative approach, and social significance that I decided to join.
Q. What kind of work are you involved in? Please tell us about your job duties.
My primary focus since joining the company has been to explore the possibility of creating carbon credits by changing livestock waste management methods to techniques that reduce greenhouse gas (CH₄ and N₂O) emissions.
As this was a first-of-its-kind project, I’ve been working with farmers and certifying bodies to adapt the data they manage to meet the required standards for verification. I’ve also developed models to calculate the volume of carbon credits that can be generated.
Recently, my work has shifted to developing a system that is easy for farmers to manage and ensures the data aligns with the application standards, all to streamline the application process for the next fiscal year and beyond.
Q. What challenges have you faced so far?
The challenge was to gather all the required documents without omission and correctly align them with the standards demanded by the certification body.
Since this was the first initiative of its kind in Japan, we often found ourselves having to ask farmers to resubmit the necessary documents. In some cases, we later discovered missing information during our own checks and had to request the documents again, which caused delays in the submission process.
To address this, we created a comprehensive checklist of all required documents and arranged face-to-face meetings with each farmer. During these meetings, we reviewed and confirmed every item on the spot while proceeding with the application process.
Although this approach initially seemed time-consuming, it ultimately proved far more efficient than repeatedly exchanging emails back and forth.
Q. What has been a rewarding experience working at Green Carbon?
I find great fulfillment in being consistently involved since joining the company in an unprecedented initiative in Japan, and in feeling that I am playing a part in making it happen.
I also find immense joy in stepping into uncharted territory, engaging in dialogue with diverse stakeholders, and gradually building systems and frameworks while feeling my own knowledge and perspective expand along the way. Above all, being able to witness firsthand how the credits we create empower farmers, boosting their confidence and inspiring their next actions, is truly rewarding.
Q. Finally, please share a message for those who wish to work at Green Carbon.
At Green Carbon, we’re taking on challenges in areas no one has ever ventured into before.
That’s exactly why I believe that no matter your values or background, if you have the curiosity to dive into the unknown, you can truly enjoy working in an environment full of things yet to be discovered.
I’d love for you to join us in this challenge!
