【The only private Japanese company to participate】Green Carbon Speaks at “The Future of Global Food Systems Forum,” Co-hosted by ADB in Celebration of IRRI’s 65th Anniversary

Promoting our AWD initiatives on the international stage, backed by our achievements in Southeast Asia.

Green Carbon Corporation (CEO: Jun Ohkita, hereinafter “Green Carbon”), a company engaged in nature-based carbon credit creation and sales, is pleased to announce that its COO, Mr. Seno, participated as a panelist in “The Future of Global Food Systems Forum.” This event was co-hosted by the Asian Development Bank (hereinafter “ADB”) and the International Rice Research Institute (hereinafter “IRRI”) at IRRI Headquarters in Los Banos, Philippines, on June 9, 2025.
The forum, held in commemoration of IRRI’s 65th anniversary, focused on the latest initiatives and future prospects for sustainable and low-carbon rice cultivation. Green Carbon was the sole private Japanese company to participate, sharing the stage with government organizations such as the Philippine Rice Research Institute (hereinafter “PhilRice”), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (hereinafter “JAXA”), and the Philippine Department of Agriculture (hereinafter “DOA”).

◆Background of Participation

Green Carbon is dedicated to creating nature-based carbon credits, with a primary focus on Southeast Asia. The company is developing a wide range of projects in areas including forest conservation, rice paddies, mangrove reforestation, reduction of methane emissions from cattle, and biochar. By developing carbon credit projects tailored to the natural resources of each region and leveraging satellite data for site selection and monitoring, Green Carbon ensures efficient and highly transparent project operations.
Green Carbon is actively promoting projects in the Philippines, focused on reducing methane gas from paddy fields and creating carbon credits through the use of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) *1. We already have projects underway in Bulacan, Batangas, and Nueva Ecija provinces, and we plan to implement similar projects in 15 provinces across the Philippines this year. Our goal is to gradually expand this to approximately 1 million hectares of paddy fields throughout the Philippines by 2030. Furthermore, with the approval of the paddy field methodology under the Japan-Philippines Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) *2, we are accelerating the formation of JCM projects.
Our proven track record in the Philippines led to Green Carbon being invited to speak at the co-hosted session with ADB at this event. At the forum, Green Carbon presented on the business plans, current status, recent results, and challenges related to AWD in the Philippines and other Asian countries. Participants showed high expectations for our work, especially regarding how the rapid expansion of AWD contributes to increased farmer income and food security. We also noted a significant increase in our presence, as many attendees were already familiar with Green Carbon’s activities.

◆Future Outlook

Green Carbon believes that the rapid adoption of AWD is crucial not only for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also for enhancing food security in various countries by increasing farmers’ incomes. We plan to accelerate our initiatives in countries across Asia with an overwhelming sense of speed. We will continue to engage with governments of other countries to create conditions that enable the use of the JCM, as is the case in the Philippines. Additionally, we will proactively promote the use of compliance markets other than JCM and voluntary markets to ensure the timely expansion of AWD.
In the Philippines, we’re expanding AWD implementation to 15 provinces this season, with plans for gradual rollout across approximately 1 million hectares of paddy fields nationwide by 2030. Moving forward, we will similarly expand our efforts in countries where we already have a presence, such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia, and in other nations as well. In Japan, we’re advancing J-Credit creation projects derived from livestock manure processing and biochar. Overseas, we are likely to advance nature-based credit creation projects, including biochar initiatives.

※1:Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD)
Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a method that involves repeatedly flooding and naturally drying paddy fields every few days, using the water level as a guide. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage, contributing to water resource conservation.

※2:Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)
The Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) is a system where Japan contributes to greenhouse gas emission reductions in partner countries through the spread of its superior decarbonization technologies, and those reductions are then utilized to achieve the emission reduction targets of both countries. The Philippines commenced the JCM with Japan in January 2017, making project implementation between the two countries possible.
