Aiming to further verify the effectiveness of AWD in terms of water savings, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improved yields
Green Carbon, inc. (CEO: Jun Okita), a company engaged in nature-based carbon credit generation and sales, is pleased to announce that we have signed an MOU with the Vietnam National University, Hanoi School of Business (HSB: Hanoi School of Business & Management※1), a higher education institution, to further test the effectiveness of AWD (Intermittent Irrigation※2).。
This project will research and verify the impact of AWD on rice quality in paddy rice cultivation. The project aims to scientifically clarify the multifaceted effects of AWD from a new perspective of “quality”, in addition to the widely known effects of AWD on water saving, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, improvement of yield and reduction of rice fall. This project is a pioneering initiative that simultaneously promotes sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation, and it will continue to accelerate its progress going forward.
◆Background of the MOU for this project
Green Carbon is involved in the creation of nature-based carbon credits, mainly in South-East Asia, and has developed a wide range of nature-based carbon credit creation projects, including forest conservation, paddy fields, mangrove plantations, cattle burp reduction and biochar projects. It develops carbon credit generation projects suited to the natural resource characteristics of each region and uses satellite data for site selection and monitoring to ensure efficient and transparent project management.
In particular, in Vietnam, the company is promoting a project to reduce methane gas in paddy fields using AWD as its core business, and established a branch office in Vietnam in August 2024, with MOUs currently signed with 22 provinces in the country to develop the project. In the course of promoting these AWD dissemination initiatives, we recognised that it is essential to scientifically clarify how AWD affects the quality of rice, which is the foundation of rice cultivation, in addition to its environmental benefits, in order to further disseminate the technology and increase its value. This has led to the formal signing of an MOU with HSB, one of the leading research and educational institutions in Vietnam, which has in-depth knowledge of agricultural economics, business management and regional development.
◆The Role of Each Participating Company in the Project
We are considering conducting a comparative study in Nghe An Province, Vietnam, focusing on fields where Green Carbon has already implemented AWD. The study will involve harvesting rice from fields with and without AWD application, followed by comparisons through taste evaluations and analyses of various components related to nutrition and functionality.
In this project, HSB will be responsible for identifying the specific endpoints involved in rice quality, and Green Carbon will share its knowledge of AWD in accordance with international standards and lead the process of implementation support, collection of necessary data and sample management, in partnership with farmers, up to harvest.

◆Prospects for Green Carbon initiatives in Vietnam
Green Carbon is participating in the 1 million ha project led by the Vietnamese Government. This is a top-priority initiative led by the Vietnamese Government, announced in November 2023, which aims to promote high-quality, low environmental impact rice cultivation in a total rice paddy area of 1 million ha in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam by 2030.
The benefits of working with HSB on AWD quality will be used in this 1 million ha project to improve rice yield and quality in Vietnam, while also contributing to the decarbonisation of rice cultivation.

※1:Business School, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.(HSB:Hanoi School of Business & Management)
HSB is a higher education institution established in accordance with Decision No. 252/TCCB of the President of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, dated 13 July 1995. It is also a research-oriented autonomous school of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi and has a large network of contacts in industry and academia in Vietnam and the region.
※2:AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying)
Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a method where the water level in the rice paddies is monitored, and water is alternated between flooding and natural drying every few days. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD reduces water usage and contributes to the conservation of water resources.
