Green Carbon Inc. (President: Jun Okita, hereinafter “Green Carbon”), together with its subsidiary in Vietnam – Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Co., Ltd. (hereinafter: “Green Carbon Vietnam”), is pleased to announce its participation in the Conference on Promoting Investment in High-Quality Rice Areas, Reducing Emissions, and Linking Green Growth in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) and the Embassy of Vietnam in Japan.
◆ Introduction
Green Carbon is a leading company of nature-based carbon credit projects, with a strong focus on Southeast Asia. Its projects span diverse initiatives such as forest conservation, mangrove restoration, biochar applications, and methane production in agricultural systems. Each project is designed to align with local ecological conditions and is supported by advanced satellite-based monitoring to ensure transparency and credibility throughout the implementation.
In Vietnam, Green Carbon has prioritized tackling methane emissions from rice cultivation through the deployment of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD)※ irrigation techniques. Since the establishment of its local office in August 2024, the company has forged partnerships nationwide, formalized through Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with authorities in 10 provinces under the new province merging system. These collaborations are accelerating the rollout of AWD practices and reinforcing Vietnam’s transition toward low-emission, sustainable rice production.
Based on these achievements, on October 21, Green Carbon participated in the conference and introduced key projects in Vietnam, including the application of AWD in rice production, the export of high-quality AWD rice, and the Agreen system.
◆ Project Background and Environmental Impact
In response to the impacts of climate change in recent years, the Government of Vietnam has encouraged provinces to adopt low-emission rice cultivation techniques, aiming to reduce water consumption in agriculture and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
In Vietnam, under the guidance of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, Green Carbon Vietnam has been conducting pilot trials and operational deployments of AWD rice cultivation projects across multiple provinces nationwide, spanning the Northern, Central, and Southern regions. Following cultivation, the rice will undergo rigorous quality control in collaboration with leading research institutions to establish a strong identity for Vietnam’s high-quality, low-emission AWD rice in both domestic and international markets.
At the conference, Green Carbon also introduced the “Agreen” system, a digital platform designed to provide end-to-end traceability from farmers to investors. Agreen can track farm activities and monitor maximum residue limits (MRLs), enabling the generation of high-transparency, high-quality carbon credits. This innovation supports the development of Vietnam’s carbon credit market, facilitates monitoring of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and contributes to advancing sustainable agricultural development and climate action nationwide.
◆ Future Goals
Looking ahead, Green Carbon aims to expand the export of high-quality AWD rice and promote the broader implementation of the Agreen system across Vietnam. Through these efforts, the company seeks to enhance the global competitiveness of Vietnam’s sustainable rice sector while contributing to the country’s goal for low-emission agriculture and climate resilience.
※AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying)
Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a technique that involves periodically flooding and naturally drying paddy fields based on the water level. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage and contribute to the conservation of water resources.

◆ About Green Carbon
Guided by the vision of “Harnessing the power of life to save the Earth,” Green Carbon develops and supports projects that generate, register, and sell nature-based carbon credits both in Japan and abroad. The company is also engaged in agriculture-related businesses, R&D initiatives, and ESG consulting.
Its business activities span Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia, and South America, creating credits from rice paddies, biochar, forest conservation, carbon farming, mangrove planting, and cattle methane reduction. In Japan, Green Carbon obtained certification in FY2023 for the country’s first and one of the largest-scale rice paddy J-Credit projects (approx. 6,220 t). In FY2024, the company plans to expand this initiative to around 40,000 ha (approx. 80,000 t).
Green Carbon also provides “Agreen,” a one-stop platform service that streamlines the entire process of credit registration, application, and sales. By simplifying procedures and documentation, the service reduces the administrative burden on credit creators.
