Aiming to Enhance the Reliability of Carbon Credit Generation through Satellite Data and AI Technology
Green Carbon, Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita, hereinafter referred to as Green Carbon) announced the analysis results of its AWD project currently underway in the Philippines at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (hereinafter, “COP29”※1), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Thursday, November 14, 2024. The announcement was made jointly with Archeda Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Hirotada Tsumura, hereinafter referred to as “Archeda”), a company developing satellite data-based forest monitoring and monitoring solutions for nature-based carbon credits.
Green Carbon and Archeda are collaborating to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying※2) project. Archeda’s analysis solution leverages satellite data and proprietary AI technology to efficiently identify suitable sites for the project, supporting the optimal implementation of AWD techniques.
Regarding the presentation at COP29
Green Carbon participated in the Japan Pavilion at COP29 and took the stage at the session hosted by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on the “Use of Earth Observation Satellite Data in Voluntary Carbon Credits.” During the session, Green Carbon presented a case study on utilizing Earth observation satellite data in its rice paddy project, “Carbon Credit Generation through Methane Gas Reduction,” showcasing its analysis solution.
Background and Purpose of the Development of the Analysis Solution
The selection of project sites for carbon projects is critical to generating reliable carbon credits. It is essential to carefully choose locations that meet the required methodology conditions and align with global standards. Particularly, historical land use changes provide vital information to ensure the project’s validity and additionality.
Using satellite data and AI technology, the analysis solution developed by Archeda extracts suitable sites for the project based on the methodological conditions, including past land use data. Leveraging this solution, Green Carbon has identified appropriate candidate sites for its AWD project in the Philippines. Moving forward, both companies will continue working towards expanding project sites and generating high-quality carbon credits.
※1: The 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29)
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is held annually under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was adopted by the United Nations in 1992. As the highest decision-making body of the treaty, it serves as a platform for discussing international efforts to address climate change.
※2: AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying)
A water management technique for rice paddies that alternates between filling the field with water and drying it out every few days. This technique is effective in reducing methane emissions, as methane-producing bacteria are activated in low-oxygen conditions. It is gaining attention as a method that simultaneously reduces irrigation water usage and greenhouse gas emissions.

◆ About Green Carbon, inc.
Green Carbon operates with the vision of “Saving the Earth with the Power of Life”, providing comprehensive support from carbon credit creation, registration, to sales. Additionally, we are involved in agriculture-related businesses, research and development, ESG consulting. Among others. Our main focus is on generation carbon credits through methane gas reduction in rice paddies, where we have obtained certification for J-Credits, the first and largest in Japan (approximately 6,220 tons), and plan to expand to around 50,000 hectares in the fiscal year 2024. We also offer a service called “Agreen” that integrates credit registration, application, and sales into one platform, simplifying procedures such as application registration and document preparation, thus reducing workload for credit creators.

◆ About Archeda, Inc.
Archeda, Inc. is a Tokyo-based startup that develops analytical models for nature-based carbon credit projects using satellite data. We provide optimal analytical solutions for each stage of the project development process, including site selection, project registration, monitoring, and credibility checks. Our focus is on nature-based projects in forests (Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation; ARR, Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation; REDD+, etc.), paddy fields (Alternate Wetting and Drying; AWD), and mangroves. We also support international methodologies such as Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard, and Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). Furthermore, we provide solutions for municipalities and forestry businesses to estimate forest resources and detect illegal logging using satellite data.
