◆Background of the Appearance and lecture
Green Carbon develops nature-based carbon credit projects across Southeast Asia, including forest conservation, rice paddies, mangrove reforestation, enteric fermentation reduction in livestock, and biochar. With tailored approaches suited to local ecosystems and geographies, the company utilizes satellite data for precise site selection and monitoring, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
Thailand has become a key focus, with particular emphasis on AWD*¹ and biochar solutions. As agriculture is a major contributor to Thailand’s GDP and the country is significantly affected by climate change, the adoption of Green Carbon’s technologies is expected to enhance agricultural sustainability and invigorate the carbon credit market.
Green Carbon has also served as an advisor on carbon credits for the “Green Universities in the Greater Mekong Subregion Community: The United Nations Carbon Offset Platform,” a program led by Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon (RMUTP) and supported by Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC). Building on this relationship, Green Carbon signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RMUTP in October 2024 to further expand nature-based carbon credit initiatives in Thailand.
In light of this background, Green Carbon was invited to appear on this educational program co-produced by the Thai government and RMUTP as a representative from the private sector. The invitation recognized the company’s achievements in projects such as methane reduction in rice farming through AWD and the generation of carbon credits via biochar production. The program aims to raise awareness among young people, farmers, and educational institutions about agriculture’s contribution to climate change mitigation—an objective that closely aligns with Green Carbon’s mission.

◆Key Messages of This Educational Program
1. Rice Farming and Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities |
---|
・Rice farming is an important part of Thailand’s culture and economy, it is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions—particularly methane. ・Carbon credit systems offer a mechanism through which farmers can receive a reward by adopting environmentally friendly practices |
2. The Need for Collaboration Among the Private Sector, Government, and Local Communities |
---|
・Role of the government: System design (MRV standards by TGO), incentives (subsidies, tax reductions), technical support ・Role of companies: Introduction of technology, support for credit certification, promotion of ESG through sustainable procurement ・Role of local communities: Knowledge sharing through agricultural cooperatives, group monitoring, strengthening negotiation power |
3. Expectations for Regional Expansion and Education |
---|
・Establishment of demonstration fields, simple training, and income simulations to make it easier for small-scale farmers to participate ・The importance of registration support, provision of materials, and awareness-raising activities (in collaboration with schools and temples) by local governments |
4. Challenges and Future Outlook |
---|
・Barriers related to the cost, technology, and record management of MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) ・Reducing the burden through digitalization and building a comprehensive dissemination model that reflects the voices of local communities |
◆Looking Ahead
Green Carbon is promoting the adoption of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) techniques in Thailand, while also advancing a biochar project that utilizes waste materials from the rubber industry. In addition, the company is developing a robust MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) system called “Agreen,” which leverages satellite and IoT technologies. The company is aligning its efforts with the Premium T-VER program and the JCM track under Premium T-VER, while also pursuing compatibility with international carbon credit standards such as Puro.earth, Verra, and Gold Standard. These efforts are aimed at enabling credit exports not only to Japan and Thailand but also to other international markets.
Building on the success of its recent project in Kamphaeng Phet Province in northern Thailand, Green Carbon plans to launch eight new pilot projects within 2025. Looking ahead, the company aims to gradually expand its activities to major agricultural provinces, including Phitsanulok, Ayutthaya, and Nakhon Ratchasima, with the goal of covering an area of 1.5 million hectares. Through collaboration with investors, companies, and government agencies in Thailand and abroad, Green Carbon is working to establish one of the largest rice paddy-based decarbonization projects in Asia.

DLTV (Distance Learning Television) is a national remote education broadcasting network established in 1995 under the initiative of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Created to address educational disparities across Thailand, DLTV continues to operate today under the patronage of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The platform now focuses on key themes such as lifelong learning, vocational training, and environmental education, delivering accessible educational content nationwide. Currently, DLTV broadcasts 24 hours a day across 15 specialized channels. Among them, DLTV13 is dedicated to agricultural and vocational education.
※1:AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying)Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a method where the water level in the rice paddies is monitored, and water is alternated between flooding and natural drying every few days. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD reduces water usage and contributes to the conservation of water resources.
