This time, we sat down with Rahul Singh, who’s global project manager in India. We hope you enjoy the read!
Q. Please briefly introduce yourself, including your career to date.
Throughout my career, I’ve accumulated extensive experience in areas such as logistics, project management, and operations, with a special focus on waste management and carbon emission reduction and removal projects. I bring a robust blend of technical and business acumen to my work, backed by an engineering degree and a master’s in global business operations and supply chain. My journey has always been driven by a passion for integrating sustainability into every process I engage with.
Currently, I lead the development and management of our biochar business initiatives—a role that goes far beyond managing tasks. I’m committed to a holistic approach that spans the entire lifecycle of biochar production. This includes everything from selecting optimal plant locations and overseeing construction to building and empowering highly skilled operations and maintenance teams. My daily work involves conducting meticulous supply and demand analyses, negotiating cost-effective biomass procurement contracts, and securing profitable sales agreements for our biochar outputs.
Beyond these operational responsibilities, I constantly seek to drive innovation through strategic partnerships. I work closely with plant suppliers to ensure Puro.earth eligibility and collaborate with other biochar project developers to broaden our market reach. This collaborative effort not only supports rigorous environmental standards but also fosters sustainable growth and industry leadership.
I’m passionate about leveraging these experiences to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future, continually seeking new opportunities to streamline operations and expand our impact.
Q.What made you want to work at GreenCarbon?
I was drawn to Green Carbon because their vision of “Saving the Earth with the Power of nature” perfectly aligns with my passion for sustainability . With an engineering degree and a master’s in global business operations and supply chain, I have dedicated my career to integrating sustainability into every process—from waste management initiatives to carbon emission reduction and removals projects. Green Carbon’s comprehensive approach to carbon credit creation, registration, and sales, resonated with my experience and ambition.
Having led biochar business initiatives and managed projects from plant selection to operational excellence, I see a tremendous opportunity at Green Carbon to drive meaningful environmental change. Their pioneering work, such as methane reduction in rice paddies and research in accelerating plant growth, is in perfect harmony with my background in logistics, project management, and operations. I am excited about the prospect of leveraging my technical and strategic expertise to contribute to expanding these initiatives, forging partnerships, and supporting a greener future.
Green Carbon’s commitment to innovation and sustainability makes it the ideal place for me to further my career and make an impactful contribution to a world striving for carbon neutrality.
Q.You are listed as a person in charge, but what kind of work do you do? Also, what is the challenge of your job?
I lead the development and management of our biochar project initiatives, which involves overseeing every stage of the production process. My work spans from selecting optimal plant locations and supervising construction to assembling and mentoring skilled operations and maintenance teams. I conduct thorough supply and demand analyses, negotiate cost-effective biomass procurement contracts, and secure profitable sales agreements, all while forging strategic partnerships that extend our market reach and ensure compliance with sustainability standards, such as securing Puro.earth eligibility.
The biggest challenge I face lies in harmonizing the technical, operational, and commercial facets of our projects amid a constantly evolving regulatory and market landscape. Navigating the complexities of sustainability—ensuring that our processes remain both environmentally sound and economically viable—requires agile decision-making, and seamless coordination with multiple stakeholders. This dynamic interplay of challenges not only tests my strategic and operational skills but also fuels my passion for driving impactful changes.
Q.What challenges have you faced so far?
I’ve encountered a range of challenges with high-tech pyrolysis biochar production projects using biomass in India and Southeast Asia, spanning technical, operational, regulatory, and market aspects.
Technical Challenges:
Integrating advanced pyrolysis equipment with locally sourced biomass is complex. The variable quality and composition of biomass feedstock necessitate precise calibration of high-tech systems for optimal efficiency and minimal emissions. Additionally, these systems require specialized maintenance and consistent operator training, which can be challenging in markets where technical expertise is still developing.
Operational Challenges:
Ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality biomass is a persistent hurdle. Seasonal variations, fragmented biomass markets, and infrastructural limitations in some regions. Balancing procurement, storage, and transport while maintaining cost-effectiveness further complicates operations.
Regulatory and Market Challenges:
Navigating diverse environmental regulations and obtaining permits across different jurisdictions requires rigorous adherence to standards. Compliance with emissions norms, coupled with the need to secure certifications and demonstrate project viability, adds another layer of complexity. Furthermore, building strategic partnerships with local communities, government bodies, and technical experts is crucial to drive market adoption and scalability, yet establishing such collaborations is often challenging in rapidly evolving regional markets.
These challenges drive me to continuously innovate and refine our approaches, ensuring that our projects not only achieve technical and operational excellence but also contribute significantly to sustainable development and carbon emission reduction in the region.
