In collaboration with Hokkaido Bank, Hokuriku Bank, Hokuyo Bank, Megafarm Dairy, and various equipment manufacturers.
Green Carbon Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita, hereinafter referred to as Green Carbon), a company engaged in nature-based carbon credit creation and sales, is pleased to announce the completion of Japan’s first program-based registration for dairy-derived J-Credits. This achievement was made in collaboration with Hokuhoku Financial Group’s Hokkaido Bank Inc. (President: Yuji Kanema, hereinafter “Hokkaido Bank”) and Hokuriku Bank Inc. (President: Hiroshi Nakazawa, hereinafter “Hokuriku Bank”), Hokuyo Bank Inc. (President: Hirotsune Tsuyama, hereinafter “Hokuyo Bank”), Megafarm Dairy based in Hokkaido, and various equipment manufacturers.
The J-Credit methodology developed by Green Carbon is based on “Changes in Livestock Manure Management Methods (AG-002)” (hereinafter “this methodology”). Currently, the adoption of J-Credits in the livestock and dairy sectors remains limited, with only a few standard registrations completed to date. By becoming the first in Japan to register under a program-based approach, Green Carbon aims to expand J-Credit initiatives among livestock and dairy farmers nationwide. In Hokkaido, Green Carbon has already established a livestock network of approximately 50,000 cattle. In its first year, the company plans to generate approximately 7,000 tons of J-Credits, making it the largest initiative of its kind in Japan. Furthermore, Green Carbon is launching a new project, in collaboration with financial institutions and equipment manufacturers, with the goal of reducing 1 million tons of carbon emissions annually, particularly focusing on Hokkaido.

◆Background of Japan’s First Program-Based Registration
Green Carbon has previously organized rice farmers through the Rice Farming Consortium and applied for J-Credits under this initiative. Nature-based carbon credits extend far beyond rice field credits—they encompass forestry, biochar, livestock and dairy farming, and carbon farming, all of which hold significant potential. To provide comprehensive support for producers participating in various projects, Green Carbon established the Nature-Based Consortium as a platform for facilitating applications.
With this background, Green Carbon opened an office in Hokkaido in November 2024, focusing particularly on the dairy farming project. Thanks to business-matching collaborations with Hokkaido Bank, Hokuriku Bank, and Hokuyo Bank, we successfully partnered with Megafarm Dairy and equipment manufacturers in Hokkaido. This enabled us to expand the adoption of our methodology, leading to the establishment of a livestock network of approximately 50,000 cattle in the first year.
At the time of the program-based registration for this methodology, Green Carbon had already coordinated with dairy farmers managing approximately 20,000 cattle to facilitate J-Credit creation. Among them, large-scale farms managing over 10,000 cattle are expected to generate around 7,000 tons of J-Credits in the first year (fiscal year 2025). Beyond credit creation, the Nature-Based Consortium aims to solve challenges faced by dairy farmers and contribute to local communities. To achieve this, we plan to expand our partnerships not only with financial institutions and equipment manufacturers but also with other businesses. Looking ahead, we are designing a project targeting an annual reduction of 1 million tons of carbon emissions, centered in Hokkaido, and are actively seeking companies to collaborate with us on this initiative.

◆Future Developments
As we continue to expand our existing network, we will strengthen our collaboration with financial institutions, equipment manufacturers, dairy product manufacturers, and dairy farmers in Hokkaido. Additionally, we are actively seeking corporate partners to help realize our project targeting a reduction of 1 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
We are also planning to hold webinars and other informational events regarding the deployment of this methodology. For further details, please feel free to contact us.

◆Business Introduction of Green Carbon
Green Carbon operates with the vision of “Saving the Earth with the Power of Life”, by providing comprehensive support for the creation, registration, and sales of carbon credits in domestic and international markets. We are also expanding our business operations in wider industries including the agriculture, research & development, and ESG consulting. Our operations are primarily based in Japan and Southeast Asia, while currently expanding business in Australia and South America. We create naturally derived carbon credits from sources including water paddies, biochar, forest conservation, carbon farming, mangrove plantation, and methane from cattle eructation. Our main focus is on generating carbon credits through methane gas reduction in rice paddies, where we have obtained the first and largest certification for J-Credits in Japan (approximately 6,220 tons), and plan to expand to around 40,000 hectares (approximately 100,000 tons) in the fiscal year 2024. We also offer a service called “Agreen” that integrates credit registration, application, and sales into one platform, simplifying procedures such as application registration and document preparation, thus reducing workload for credit creators.
