◆Background and Roles of the MOU with ASHAS
Green Carbon is dedicated to creating nature-based carbon credits in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in Southeast Asia. Our initiatives include a wide range of projects in Japan and overseas to generate nature-based carbon credits. This includes forest conservation, rice paddy management, mangrove reforestation, reducing methane emissions from cattle, and biochar projects.
ASHAS promote the self-sufficiency of local communities in Haiti through sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation efforts. The organization is already practicing agroforestry on over 600 ha of farmland and is actively promoting decarbonization in the region.
Haiti’s terrain, with approximately 70% of the land being hilly, allows to produce a wide range of agricultural products. However, in recent years, the country has seen an increase in agricultural damage due to natural disasters such as rising temperatures, heavy rainfall, floods, droughts, and cyclones, highlighting the vulnerability to climate change. Agriculture is the core industry in Haiti, employing over 50% of the working population, yet the sector struggles with low productivity due to its reliance on small-scale farmers. In addition, climate change is exacerbating deforestation and soil degradation, leading to declining agricultural productivity.
In order to address these challenges, Green Carbon has signed an MOU with ASHAS. Under this agreement, the two organizations will deploy large-scale carbon credit creation project utilizing agroforestry to accelerate both farmers income improvement and regional decarbonization. ASHAS will be responsible for providing information and conducting surveys on the project areas, as well as managing stakeholders during project implementation. Green Carbon, leveraging its expertise in carbon credit creation, will design optimal project plans, handles the application and registration of carbon credits, and secure investors for the project.
◆Project Overview
This project will be implemented in the Artibonite region of central Haiti, which was significantly impacted by the 2016 hurricane. The project will utilize valuable tree species such as avocado, mango, rubber trees, and Mombin, expanding agroforestry practices across the region. The project is expected to cover up to 10,000 hectares of farmland and generate approximately 5 million tons of carbon credits over 20 years.

Our main focus is on generating carbon credits through methane gas reduction in rice paddies, where we have obtained the first and largest certification for J-Credits in Japan (approximately 6,220 tons), and plan to expand to around 40,000 hectares (approximately 100,000 tons) in the fiscal year 2024. We also offer a service called “Agreen” that integrates credit registration, application, and sales into one platform, simplifying procedures such as application registration and document preparation, thus reducing workload for credit creators.
