Overview of the “Laos Decarbonization Solutions Business Mission”
In 2021, the Laotian government pledged to reduce emissions by 60% by 2030 and presented a roadmap to achieve net zero by 2050, conditional on support from developed nations.
In Laos, active efforts are underway to achieve carbon neutrality, especially in the power generation and forestry sectors. The government is also advancing legislative measures and investments in decarbonization, such as the development of a national REDD+ strategy※1and government directives on carbon credit management.
During the “ Laos Decarbonization Solutions Business Mission” held from Tuesday, October 29 to Thursday, October 31, 2024, interactions and site visits were conducted with Laotian government agencies and local businesses. At the networking event hosted by the Japanese Embassy on Wednesday, October 30, Japanese companies delivered pitches, and exchanges took place between Japanese companies and Laotian businesses and government representatives. Additionally, on Thursday, October 31, a seminar was held by the Laotian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Forestry Department to discuss decarbonization policies and legislation, followed by business negotiations between Japanese and Laotian companies.

Background of Participation
Green Carbon is committed to creating nature-based carbon credits throughout Southeast Asia, with a wide range of projects including forest conservation, paddy field management, mangrove reforestation, livestock methane reduction, and biochar initiatives.
Our participation was prompted by recognition of our efforts in carbon credit creation within Southeast Asia. During this mission, Green Carbon shared insights into the potential of the AWD(Alternate Wetting and Drying ※2) project for paddy fields in Laos and engaged in dynamic discussions, with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and local businesses during the networking session.
Moving forward, Green Carbon plans to leverage its expertise in carbon credit creation across Southeast Asia by collaborating with universities and companies in Laos to advance project initiatives. Additionally, beyond paddy fields, Green Carbon aims to harness Laos’s natural resources to contribute to decarbonization efforts.
※1:REDD+
REDD+ is an international initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, while promoting forest conservation and sustainable management. By protecting forests, REDD+ helps mitigate climate change and curb deforestation through economic incentives. The initiative also contributes to achieving national greenhouse gas reduction targets through the use of carbon credit systems.
※2: AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying)
AWD is a technique that involves periodically flooding and naturally drying paddy fields based on the water level. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage and contribute to the conservation of water resources.
