Green Carbon, Inc. will speak at the COP29 “Japan Pavilion” seminar in Azerbaijan on November 14

Introducing the Use of Earth Observation Satellite Data in Voluntary Credits

Green Carbon, Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita, hereinafter “Green Carbon”) will participate in the Japan Pavilion*1 at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29*2), held from Monday, November 11 to Friday, November 22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Green Carbon’s COO, Seno, will speak at the seminar titled “Utilization of Earth Observation Satellite Data in Voluntary Credits” (hereinafter “the Seminar”), hosted by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

In this seminar, Seno will discuss how Green Carbon utilizes Earth observation satellite data as evidence for its paddy field project, which creates carbon credits through methane gas reduction.

Overview of the Seminar

With the recent growth of the carbon credit market, transparency and verification costs have emerged as key challenges to ensuring reliability. Earth observation satellite data is gaining attention as a solution, allowing for efficient monitoring of large-scale projects while maintaining cost-effectiveness and enhancing reliability. This seminar aims to deepen understanding of the utility of Earth observation satellite data in carbon credit transactions from the perspectives of both space agencies and private companies.

Background of Green Carbon’s Participation

Since last year, Green Carbon has been selected as one of the demonstration themes for JAXA’s ALOS-2 commercialization demonstration, advancing a project that develops carbon credits through methane gas reduction in paddy fields utilizes satellite data. The project analyzes water level data from the target fields and satellite observation data from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) with its onboard Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), providing objective evidence for methane reduction and enhancing the transparency of created credits. Invited by JAXA, Green Carbon will share its insights on monitoring greenhouse gas reductions using satellite data.

As part of “Corporate Initiatives Utilizing Satellite Data,” Green Carbon will introduce the application of satellite data for reducing methane emissions in rice cultivation. Additionally, Green Carbon will engage in discussions with space agencies and voluntary credit certification bodies on challenges and future expectations for satellite data usage.
