Green Carbon, Inc. has signed an MOU with Amru Rice, a Cambodian rice wholesaler, for a carbon credit development project derived from rice husk biochar

Promoting economic development through synergy with paddy field projects

Green Carbon, Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita, hereinafter referred to as Green Carbon) is pleased to announce that it has signed an MOU with Amru Rice Cambodia Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Amru Rice”), a Cambodian rice milling and wholesale company, for the joint development of a biochar project utilizing rice husks. Through the synergy with Green Carbon’s methane reduction project from paddy fields implementing AWD ※1, this partnership aims to expand both AWD and biochar initiatives, contributing to economic development in Cambodia.

◆Background and Role of the MOU with Amru Rice

Green Carbon is dedicated to creating nature-based carbon credits primarily in Southeast Asia. Our initiatives include a wide range of projects such as forest conservation, rice paddy management, mangrove reforestation, reducing methane emissions from cattle, and biochar projects.

To further its biochar efforts in Cambodia, Green Carbon has signed an MOU with Amru Rice, Cambodia’s largest rice milling and wholesaling company. Headquartered in Cambodia, Amru Rice partners with approximately 20,000 small-scale farmers to produce environmentally friendly rice without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Additionally, it is dedicated to improving farmers’ livelihoods by promoting economic stability and expanding educational opportunities.

Through this MOU, Green Carbon and Amru Rice will jointly work on producing biochar and byproducts from rice husks, along with issuing and selling carbon credits. Green Carbon and Amru Rice are also working to implement a paddy field methane reduction project, which will convert the husks generated by the project into biochar. These efforts aim to create carbon credits and provide returns to farmers, contributing to the decarbonization in society.

Green Carbon will continue expanding its biochar initiatives in Cambodia and across Southeast Asia, working to increase the scale and impact of carbon credit generation.

※1: AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying)

AWD is a technique that involves periodically flooding and naturally drying paddy fields based on the water level. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage and contribute to the conservation of water resources.
