Promoting the development of nature-based carbon credit projects in Thailand
Green Carbon, Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita, hereinafter referred to as “Green Carbon”) is pleased to announce that it has signed an MOU with Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon (hereinafter referred to as “RMUTP”). The MOU aims to promote a project focused on generating carbon credits through nature-based solutions in Thailand.
◆ Background and Role of the MOU with RMUTP
Green Carbon is dedicated to creating nature-based carbon credits primarily in Southeast Asia. Our initiatives include a wide range of projects such as forest conservation, rice paddy management, mangrove reforestation, reducing methane emissions from cattle, and biochar projects. Among them, we are promoting projects mainly in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand with a focus on methane gas reduction projects in rice paddies using AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying※1) .
RMUTP’s campus sustainability projects include energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy sources, and waste management systems to reduce the carbon footprints of the entire campus. RMUTP is also promoting decarbonization education in Thailand by developing and incorporating courses on environmental sustainability and carbon management into university curriculum.
To date, Green Carbon has been involved in the RMUTP-led National Economic and Social Development Commission of Thailand (NESDC) program “Green Universities in the Greater Mekong Subregion Community: The United Nations Carbon Offset Platform” . Based on this connection, we are pleased to conclude an MOU with RMUTP to expand our nature-based carbon credit creation activities in Thailand.
RMUTP’s role is to expand its network by requesting cooperation from local and international education institutions, organizations and industry partners to expand carbon credits and decarbonizations projects in Thailand. Green Carbon will share its expertise on carbon credit and decarbonization in Thailand education, while facilitating the development of carbon credit projects in Thailand. In signing the MOU, Green Carbon has received cooperation from the Land Development Departure of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, which will continue to support the implementation of the project. We will continue developing the project with their support.
◆ Comment from Dr. Natworapol Rachsiriwatcharabul, President of Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon
It is with great pleasure that we engage in this collaboration with Green Carbon Inc., aimed at transforming Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon into a Green University. This initiative seeks to raise awareness of environmental issues within the academic institution, whether through the development of sustainability and carbon management courses integrated into the university’s curriculum. This reflects our commitment to fostering and promoting carbon credit trading in Thailand, aligned with our goals of environmental conservation and sustainable natural resource management. Furthermore, this collaboration extends to research partnerships focused on developing solutions and accelerating efforts to mitigate industrial pollution.
※1:AWD(Alternate Wetting & Drying)
AWD is a technique that involves periodically flooding and naturally drying paddy fields based on the water level. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage and contribute to the conservation of water resources.
◆Introduction of Green Carbon
Green Carbon operates with the vision of “Saving the Earth with the Power of Life,” providing comprehensive support from carbon credit creation, registration, to sales. Additionally, we are involved in agriculture-related businesses, research and development, ESG consulting, among others. Our main focus is on generation carbon credits through methane gas reduction in rice paddies, where we have obtained certification for J-Credits, the first and largest in Japan (approximately 6,220 tons), and plan to expand to around 50,000 hectares in the fiscal year 2024. We also offer a service called “Agreen” that integrates credit registration, application, and sales into one platform, simplifying procedures such as application registration and document preparation, thus reducing the workload for credit creators.
