Green Carbon Inc. Signs MOU with Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)

Green Carbon Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita; hereinafter “Green Carbon”), a company specializing in the generation and sale of nature-based carbon credits, is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). This partnership aims to advance research cooperation on environmental sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction in Indonesia.
The primary objective of this MoU is to deepen scientific knowledge regarding emission reductions, with a focus on the land-use and agricultural sectors. It also seeks to quantitatively assess reduction potential and enhance evaluation methodologies to accurately capture environmental impacts. As a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between a public research institution and a private company, this collaboration intends to produce insights that will bridge the gap between research findings and future policy design or business implementation.

◆ Background of the Partnership

Green Carbon is actively engaged in generating nature-based carbon credits, primarily in Southeast Asia. The company operates across a diverse range of fields, including forest conservation, rice paddy management, mangrove reforestation, livestock methane reduction (cattle burps), and biochar projects. By leveraging satellite data for optimal site selection and monitoring, Green Carbon ensures highly efficient and transparent project management tailored to the natural resources of each region.
Indonesia, in particular, represents a region with immense potential for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), driven by its vast rice cultivation areas and the strategic importance of its agricultural sector. It is estimated that generating carbon credits from approximately 10 million hectares of rice paddies could unlock a market potential of roughly 42.8 billion JPY (*1).
Against this backdrop, Green Carbon has entered into this MoU with BRIN, Indonesia’s premier national research institution. The collaboration aims to establish science-based emission reduction assessments and build sustainable models for agriculture and land use.

◆Details of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Under this MoU, Green Carbon and BRIN will collaborate in the following areas:

Key Areas of Cooperation
– Research and Analysis: Conducting studies on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and their reduction potential.
– Evaluation of Sustainable Practices: Assessing sustainable agricultural practices, including Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) (*2).
– Methodology Development: Developing and reviewing environmental impact assessment methods and methodologies specifically for the agricultural sector.

Roles and Responsibilities

BRINProviding academic and scientific expertise regarding GHG emissions and environmental impacts.
Green CarbonProviding practical and operational expertise in the development and implementation of carbon credit projects.
