Name: Felix Coomber
Department/Position: Global Sourcing Unit / Intern
Area of Expertise/Assigned Duties: Peatland Restoration, Research, Documentation
University: University of Tsukuba
Major/Studies: International Social Studies
Reason for Joining Green Carbon: Due to being an athlete, I never had time to gain working experience. After finding the internship at Green Carbon on Indeed it opened up my opportunity to work and experience a different field compared to what I am learning at university. I completed a geography A Level during my time in college in the UK so I have a great understanding of the importance of the environment, so joining Green Carbon gave me the opportunity for me to put my understanding to good use and experience a career in a way that is doing good for the environment.
Career Background: I am from the United Kingdom. After finishing my A levels, where I took economics, psychology and geography, I moved to Japan where I entered the University of Tsukuba as part of the TISS (The International Social Studies) course. Outside of academics, I am 2 time British champion in gymnastics, where I trained gymnastics for 17 years before retiring in September 2025 so I could focus on graduating university.
Hobbies/How I Spend My Days Off: I am a retired English team gymnast and I enjoy playing volleyball in the circle at my university. I also enjoy going skiing when I have the time. During my free time I like to watch movies and play video games.
Student Activities/Organizations: Tsukuba University gymnastics team, Spikers volleyball circle

Q. Please give us a brief introduction of yourself, including your career history:
My name is Felix Coomber and I am a fourth year student at the University of Tsukuba studying International Social Studies (TISS) as part of the college of international studies. Before embarking on studies in Japan, I completed 3 A Levels (economics, psychology and geography) at college back home in the UK. Currently I am in the process of writing my graduation thesis at university, majoring in Sociology, where I am researching the impact that international students have on Japanese students’ English-speaking anxiety. The field that Green Carbon is in is not related to my field at university, however it has been a great experience to work for Green Carbon and put my understanding of the environment into the work that I have conducted.
Apart from academics, I am now a retired English team member and international gymnast. During my gymnastics career I had become British champion twice in different events and represented England at two international competitions, one of which I became vault champion representing my country. Now I am retired, I am part of Spikers volleyball circle at my university and enjoying my time as a student in Japan before I graduate from university.
Q. What kind of work are you involved in? Please tell us about your job
As part of the research team in the International Business department my responsibilities involve researching current and future projects and creating documents to represent those projects. Alongside that, a personal field that I have worked on is leading the research on peatland restoration as a potential method of conducting projects to generate carbon credits.
Q. What do you find rewarding about your work?
What I find rewarding about my work is knowing that the research that I have done is benefiting the environment and I feel a great sense of accomplishment when the work is complete. Also, working with people from around the world on the same task makes a great community feeling and knowing the work we have done together makes it feel rewarding.
Q. What would you like to take on in the future?
In the future I would like to work my way up to a management position. I enjoy organisation and I’m good at planning so for me a management role is my end goal. However it is a long and difficult process to get there so i’m going to do my best to work hard and get to the position i’m hoping for one day.
Q. What challenges have you faced so far?
The main challenge that I have faced so far is finding the information I need to complete the task. As the work we do at Green Carbon is quite new in some fields, there is not so much information online, so finding the information needed has proved to be a difficult challenge.
Q. Finally, please give a message to those who want to work at GreenCarbon.
For people who are looking to join Green Carbon, especially foreign students or workers, It is a great environment with lots of international employees all working and communicating together to create projects that will aid the environment. The company is taking great steps to help Japan to reduce carbon emissions and it is a great opportunity to be a part of this initiative.
