【WORLD FIRST】 Green Carbon Announces MOU with Regrow to Advance Data-Driven Agricultural Carbon Projects in Asia

The joint project will advance climate-smart agriculture practices, create economic benefits for farming communities, and support credible greenhouse gas reductions, aligned with international carbon market standards.

Rice cultivation is a significant source of global greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane. However, practices such as alternate wetting and drying (AWD) offer a powerful opportunity to reduce emissions and improve water efficiency in rice production. When paired with robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems, these practices can generate credible climate benefits and unlock value across the agricultural supply chain.

To help scale these outcomes, Green Carbon Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Regrow Agriculture, Inc., a U.S.-based agricultural climate technology company, to accelerate the development of agricultural carbon credit projects in Southeast Asia and globally. The collaboration will leverage digital MRV (dMRV) technology to support sustainable agriculture and generate high-quality carbon credits. The initial focus will be on supporting AWD projects in Vietnam, with implementation commencing in 2025 and plans to expand to additional regions and methodologies by 2030.

 Details of the Agreement

Under this MOU, Green Carbon and Regrow will collaborate to enhance MRV processes for sustainable agriculture projects.

  • Green Carbon will lead on-the-ground project development, secure local partnerships, and manage carbon credit generation.
  • Regrow will provide technical support through its DNDC (DeNitrification-DeComposition) modeling system, which quantifies GHG emissions, soil carbon dynamics and nutrient cycling in agricultural soils, and API-based integrations.

In addition to AWD project support, the partnership will include technical cooperation for Verra methodologies such as VM51, and potential joint development of methodologies for digital MRV under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM).

Project Background and Expanding Directions

This project aims to strengthen climate-smart agriculture practices and create additional economic benefits for farming communities.  Green Carbon has been promoting AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) techniques to reduce emissions while improving water efficiency in rice paddies. By implementing robust MRV systems supported by Regrow’s DNDC model, this collaboration will contribute to transparent and credible greenhouse gas reductions, aligned with international carbon market standards.

This work will lay the foundation for the Green Carbon  Agreen platform to generate nature-based carbon credits projects in a traceable, science-backed and scalable way. The integration of Agreen with Regrow’s DNDC model will enable accurate and verifiable emissions reduction reporting.

The first phase will begin in 2025 in Vietnam (VM51) and the Philippines (JCM), with plans to expand to additional countries and methodologies. Through this expansion, the collaboration will support wider adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, enable more farmers to participate in carbon markets, and contribute to global decarbonization goals.

“By combining Regrow’s DNDC modeling and experience with MRV technologies with Green Carbon’s expertise and on-the-ground partnerships, we can ensure that emissions reductions from practices like alternate wetting and drying are both scientifically robust and practically achievable,” said Bill Salas, Chief Science Officer at Regrow. “Together, we’re advancing a credible, scalable approach to carbon markets for rice systems that delivers real benefits to farmers and the climate.”

※AWD(Alternate Wetting and Drying)
AWD is a technique that involves periodically flooding and naturally drying paddy fields based on the water level. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage and contribute to the conservation of water resources.
