Green Carbon, Inc. has launched an AWD project with the Royal University of Agriculture in Cambodia for the development of carbon credits in Cambodia

Synergy with biochar projects to advance economic development

Green Carbon, Inc. (CEO: Jun Okita, hereinafter referred to as “Green Carbon”) is pleased to announce that it has launched an MOA with the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in Cambodia for the generation of carbon credits in Cambodia through the development of a paddy-based carbon credit project in Cambodia (hereinafter referred to as “the project”). The project started in October in the Battambang area and by utilizing concurrent biochar projects in Cambodia, we aim to contribute to Cambodia’s economic development through the expansion of both AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying ※1) and biochar business practices.

◆  Background of collaboration with the RUA and overview of the project

Green Carbon is dedicated to creating nature-based carbon credits primarily in Southeast Asia. Our initiatives include a wide range of projects such as forest conservation, rice paddy management, mangrove reforestation, reducing methane emissions from cattle, and biochar projects. Among these, our main projects involve methane gas reduction projects using AWD, with our activities centered in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand.

To expand nature-based carbon credits in Cambodia, Green Carbon has signed an MOU with the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in Cambodia. The RUA will focus on collaborating on the AWD project within Cambodia, introducing and recommending AWD implementation to local farmers, measuring methane gas emissions, and requesting cooperation from relevant agencies.

Green Carbon will share specialized knowledge on carbon credits, collect necessary data, and handle carbon credit issuance and sales.

Green Carbon and the RUA launched this project on October 10, 2024, on approximately 64ha of land in Battambang Province, located in northwestern Cambodia. Through this pilot project, we will identify areas for possible expansion, while collecting data necessary for scaling up, to make rapid expansion possible. By developing carbon credits and returning profits to local farmers, we will contribute to the revitalization of Cambodia’s economy.

Along with this project, Green carbon is working on a project which uses biochar to generate carbon credits. This biochar project, which utilizes rice husks (a by-product of rice cultivation) aligns well with our project in Cambodia as its application is expected to help increase rice yields.

Moving forward, we intend to develop projects which combine AWD and biochar practices starting in Cambodia and expanding to other Southeast Asian countries, contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society.

※1: AWD (Alternate Wetting & Drying)

AWD is a technique that involves periodically flooding and naturally drying paddy fields based on the water level. Compared to continuous flooding, AWD can reduce water usage and contribute to the conservation of water resources.
